Please welcome my first Artist of the Month from outside the UK who has kindly stood in for another who is so busy at present that we’ve agreed to postpone until sometime next year.
Doris Schäfer-Noske

I was born into the years of the German-economic miracle. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. In my aunt’s art books I discovered the magical and cruel world of medieval and modern painting. Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dali aroused my childhood interest. Later, at the Stuttgart Art Academy, surrealism and fantastic painting were no longer favourite issues. I studied painting under K.H. Sonderborg.

I became an Art and German teacher. During this time larger projects were not possible, there was a lack of time and space. Therefore, I drew small formats with pencil, pen and ink or painted watercolours. The intensive study of art, architecture and design of all eras and cultures resulted from my work as the teacher.
I am also a collector: old books, encyclopedias, catalogs, almanacs, magazines, maps and photo albums are very appealing to me.
Aquaelles

The aquarelles of fruits and insects were mainly created during the lockdown, which allowed me to focus on the inconspicuous treasures of our environment. In doing so, I combine the scientific with the artistic representation. The objects are often atypical or damaged, but still aesthetic. This is also how I see us humans, a little damaged, but still a miracle of creation.
Pen and Ink

All pen and ink drawings arise out of an actual theme from the media or my collections, that profoundly captivates my attention. This could be, for example, a group of women working on an assembly line. Before I graduated, I worked on an assembly line for two months and know how hard this work is. This motif becomes a sort of an anchor around which other motifs accumulate, for example an old factory building and technical elements. Sometimes a second main motif joins in: an archaic (Iron Age) goddess with a destroyed face as a personification of industrialisation. The pen and ink drawings are drawn thoughts about the state of our society or they depict utopian scenes. I have had no exhibitions worth mentioning so far.

Egon Schiele is one of my absolute favorite artists. Thanks for sharing his story here. I know a lot of people find his work difficult… or they just don’t like it. But from the moment I first discovered his art, I was captivated.

Glad you liked it Judith… Note that his figures are not realist photographic representations! ☺️

Which is why I like his work. I don’t care at all for hyperrealism.
