Artist of the Month

It never ceases to amaze me why coloured pencil, oil and soft pastels specialists command so little money when efforts such as these below are achieved compared to artists that use only paint. After all some of arts giants in fame used them and those living still do. My choice this time is…

Fiona Carvell
Award Winning Pastel Artist

Awards for – ‘Finding Honesty’
(Pastel Society of America 2021).

The wide variety of subject matters represented in Fiona’s work reflects an on-going drive to explore and develop as an Artist. She enjoys the challenges of exploring different themes and subject matters, from Landscapes and Seascapes to Still Life and Portraiture. There are common threads which run throughout the work – contrasts of movement, stillness and a sense of physical space.

Award for- ‘Fire of The Deep’ (Pastel Society UK 2020)

Many pieces resonate more emotive responses, which reveal deep connections to a particular subject; the fundamentals of expressive drawing and colour always being central to their execution.

Fiona exhibits her work regularly nationally and internationally. Her first major Award was The Royal Talens Rembrandt Award with the Pastel Society UK in 2020 for her piece, ‘Fire of The Deep’. 2021 exhibitions have included The Pastel Society UK and The Society for Graphic Fine Arts, both at The Mall Galleries in London.

“‘Solace’ and ‘Sycamore Gap’ will both be included in the ‘Inspired by Our Land’ exhibition at The Sill from December 9th- January 28th.

I love the challenges of capturing the movement of water- it’s always so varied and exciting. ‘Sound of Harris’ is currently available with Number Four gallery in the Scottish Borders.”

Amphitrite’ and ‘Poseidon’ are a diptych (as well as being Greek Gods!) and were sold earlier this year to a private collector. ‘Delight’ will be on exhibition from December 9th at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre in Northumberland, as part of the ‘Inspired by Our Land’ pastel exhibition.

She was honoured to receive her first International Award in 2021 with the Pastel Society of America as part of the annual ‘Enduring Brilliance’ Pastel exhibition, receiving the Advancement of Pastel in Modernism Award (for Distinctive Accomplishment in Pastel). Her pastel originals and limited edition prints are now represented in a number of galleries throughout the Scottish Borders, Northumberland and Devon, with collectors throughout the UK and abroad.

  1. Egon Schiele is one of my absolute favorite artists. Thanks for sharing his story here. I know a lot of people find his work difficult… or they just don’t like it. But from the moment I first discovered his art, I was captivated.

    1. You’re welcome. He will get moved to my Artists That Inspire page this Wednesday but he’ll always be on this site along with many others I like. Wednesdays are when a new artist takes over and this week it’s one of my followers from Twitter.
