Media of the Week: Collage 4 – Photo Montage

The human form, seems to be the most popular subject for photo montage collages. It was made popular in the 1960s and 1970s with many works becoming iconic surrealist pieces. There was an explosion of ideas for album covers to reflect the revolutionary new sounds and colours of the swinging sixties and the age of psychedelia. From The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ to Terry Gillian created the cartoons for Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

David Hockney revitalised the form for a while 6with panoramic scenes made from using rolls of still shots in the days before digital cameras to make one image as the scenes above by various artists. Since then the photo montage work has largely been forgotten and abandon until the advent of the digital age which is a shame given the increased interest in magazines.
